Living on houseboats was once considered a cheap alternative to buying a house, but as the advantages of living on the water became apparent they quickly rose in popularity — eventually so popular that the Dutch government capped the permits.
This particular project has been within the same family for over 50 years and has undergone a major makeover: from a wooden cottage to a water mansion.
Without a doubt, the heart of this project is the grand panoramic view of the lake. The scenery is an inherent part of the design; the white walls and minimalist approach create an ambiance that seems to float in midair.
The main challenge was to fit a living space, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and storage for boat equipment within 130 sq m — without compromising the view. The living areas are kept free of complex structures so the natural background remains visible at all times. The master bedroom sits on the second floor with a king-size bed facing directly onto the lake. The ground-floor bathroom features one-way privacy glass, offering spectacular views of the water.
